Surreal Aquarium Scenes, Kim Keever

Kim Keever creates large-scale photographs that look like landscape paintings. The effect is created by constructing miniature topographies in a 200-gallon tank.

Yes thank you Yasmin Nair for pulling together a narrative of today’s to put forward some important questions that have come to fruition in an era of “The New Gay.”

Some key questions include: where is the gay media in their response to this? What will their response tell us about the broader assimilationist project of gay marriage and respectability politics? How will this deepen/further reveal the gay establishment’s (the media as well as gay lobbyists, etc.) relationship to criminalization of HIV and sex work?

Reading the column I’m also thinking about the “What next” or how to do the work of supporting our brothers and sisters who will be affected by these events? How will we resist this clamping down of surveillance upon the our lives, sexual and professional?

Share this article and discuss it with your community. If you can, support Yasmin so she can continue to write the necessary critiques of contemporary queer experience. (Details on her awesome page).

In solidarity!

Lol had arrived there ahead of us. She was asleep in the field of rye, worn out, worn out by our trip.

Kevin McCarty, The Parlor

Jose Muñoz in Cruising Utopia on this “opulent image of the now defunct Parlor Club on Santa Monica Avenue. The tiny stage is clearly overdecorated, with its elaborate chandelier and its ruch red drapes with golden tassels. I visited the club during my regular trips to Los Angeles, when my dear friend and frequent object of study Vaginal Davis hosted her Friday-night party Bricktop there…Of all the spaces McCarty has chosen to depict, this one is most clearly and concertely the space where punk and queerness meet. McCarty’s picture of the Parlor Room and its stage, with its dense Victorian luster, beautifully captures the ethos of the party. I would summarize that ethos as a use of past decadence to critique the banality of our presentness for the purpose of imaging and enacting an enabling of queer futurity.”
